Rory McIlroy won the European Tour’s Irish Open on Sunday by three strokes, and had to fight back the tears following the tournament because this win is bigger than most.
In his post round interview, McIlroy said that he plans to donate the full $666,660 euro prize purse (about $750,000) to his charity, The Rory Foundation, which partners with children’s charities all over the world.
“It means an awful lot. This tournament now to me is one of the most important of my year. Not just because it is the Irish Open and it’s home but because of what we’re doing charitable-wise as well. The kids we’ve helped out this week. The money we’ve raised will go a long way to making their lives a little bit better.”
The Rory Foundation supports families affected by childhood cancer as well as youth with learning disabilities. His foundation hosted the Irish Open this year and in 2015, and served as its beneficiary, too.
Great win, Rory.
