OAKLAND, CA – JUNE 12: Kyrie Irving

Before Kyrie Irving is an NBA superstar, he’s a loving son and brother.

Irving grew up in northern New Jersey under his father’s roof. In fact, his dad, Drederick “Dread” Irving, gave up his own dream of playing professional basketball to provide stability for Kyrie and his sister, Asia.

“He chose to work nine hours a day, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,” Kyrie told Houzz. “He would divide the time up of working all day and teaching me how to play basketball, or dropping my sister off at dance class. He was really Superdad.”

Dread loves his home, and has no intentions of moving. Quite the entertainer, he adores having friends and family over for long meals and memorable nights.

That’s why Kyrie and his sister recently surprised their father with a major home renovation project.

Dread packed his things, and for two months, moved out of his beloved home. That’s when Kyrie, Asia and the Houzz team got to work.

They ripped out walls, provided new paint, backsplash and furniture and turned Dread’s first home into the welcoming place he has long envisioned.

With a busy basketball schedule, Kyrie couldn’t be in New Jersey for the entire project, so Asia was hands-on for the bulk of it.

That’s when she decided to offer her own personal touch and surprise Kyrie, too. She found all of the family’s trophies and medals and created a “trophy room” to display their accomplishments. And, Kyrie’s reaction was priceless (18:30 mark of video).

After seeing the home improvements, Dread was blown away.

“I’m speechless. I can’t even conjure the words but this has been a long time waiting,” he said. “This has always been my dream to knock that wall down. I never envisioned that it would be like this.”

The big reveal happens at the14:30 mark:

What a Father’s Day surprise.
