We have some belated Mother’s Day news, but it’s good stuff nonetheless. Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith and his wife, Shirley, know what it’s like to spend months in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Their daughter, Dakota, was born five months early in January, and weighed just one pound. She’s now six pounds, but still remains in the NICU so that medical professionals can continue to keep a close eye on her.

With the Smith’s spending so much time in the Cleveland Clinic, they decided to brighten the lives of others who are in the same boat as them. That’s why J.R., Shirley, and their older daughter, Demi, delivered flowers to all of the moms in the NICU on Mother’s Day. This comes from Shirley’s blog, My Kota Bear:

My husband came up with the brilliant idea of getting all of the mothers in the NICU flowers today so we did just that. When the flowers arrived I pushed the cart and Demi placed an arrangement of flowers in every room…it was super special and we both enjoyed it.

In the beginning of her blog post, Shirley described that Mother’s Day is a bittersweet holiday for her after losing her own mother eight years ago.

Please enjoy your special day and acknowledge all of the hidden figures in your very own life. Today may be bitter sweet for some of us and for me that is how my day starts off every Mothers Day for the past 8 years. I’d wake up super happy like awww shoot today is my day!! then the sadness resonates as I think about not having my own mother here with me to celebrate. However, over the years I have learned to shed my tears during the early part of the day that way I can work my way through the remainder of the day.

Here’s a brief news clip of the family’s kind gesture.

Way to be, Smith Family.
