Row, row, row your boat, but Stein Hoff, 70, won’t be gently rowing down any stream.
The Norwegian man set off on Sunday from a pier in Manhattan. The nose of his 24-foot boat was pointed toward England. That’s because over the next three months, he will attempt to row over 2,000 nautical miles across the north Atlantic Ocean without a support team.
Hoff began rowing at 17 years old. Decades later, he’s trying to recreate the 1896 journey of two Norwegian-Americans, who were the first people to row across an ocean.
His attempt is sponsored by Ripley’s, who will help him document the trip on his Facebook page.
Hoff told the HuffPost that he believes that the first four days of his trip will be the most difficult with his boat being at its heaviest, needing to navigate the New York water traffic, and getting his body used to consistent rowing.
Hoff is a cardiologist who still works two days per week.
Here’s an in-depth look at his trip.
Best of luck, Hoff. We’re rooting for you.
