Former New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and his wife, Laura, have launched an effort to provide hurricane relief to Puerto Rico.

The couple started a YouCaring page, with a goal of $100,000. At the time of this writing, almost $80,000 has been raised.

“The Island of Puerto Rico has been devastated By Hurricane Maria. The damage left behind is catastrophic, and we need your help to rebuild it,” the page says. “We hope that you can join us with a donation to help the community get back up and come back stronger than ever before. Anything that you can donate will make a big difference. Boricuas this is the time to show your love for Puerto Rico and show the world how much we love our brothers and sisters in the Island of Enchantment. Yo soy Boricua Pa’que tu lo sepas!”

Hurricane Maria struck the island on Wednesday, and according to The New York Times, has left 3.4 million people without power, and almost half the country without running water. A day later, three feet of rain fell in some areas. This is the most destructive storm in Puerto Rico in 89 years.

“Puerto Rico faces numerous obstacles as it begins to emerge from the storm: the weight of an extended debt and bankruptcy crisis; a recovery process begun after Irma, which killed at least three people and left nearly 70 percent of households without power; the difficulty of getting to an island far from the mainland; and the strain on relief efforts by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other groups already spread thin in the wake of several recent storms,” The New York Times writes.

The 17-year MLB veteran grew up in San Juan before being drafted in the 24th round of the 1990 MLB Draft.
