L.A. Rams quarterback Jared Goff is a leader on the field. Now he’s showing he’s a leader off, too. Goff created a GoFundMe page to help provide relief to those affected by the wildfires in northern California.

According to USA Today, 42 people have lost their lives to the fires, more than 200,000 acres of land have been burned, and property losses have topped $1 billion.

The 23-year-old, who was born just north of San Francisco and played college ball at the University of California, Berkeley, launched the effort with a $50,000 goal in mind. At the time of this writing, more than $36,000 has been raised.

“Being from the Bay Area and more specifically the North Bay Area the recent fires in the Sonoma, Napa, and Santa Rosa area have hit literally close to home for me,” he wrote. “Like many others from the area, I know many families that have been seriously affected by this tragedy by losing loved ones or entire homes. I wanted to start this fund to try and help some of those families and people in need at this time. I’ve been working with members of the local community there to make sure the money donated goes to the correct places. Along with my personal donation, I’ve set up this site to help raise money for the families affected by this tragedy. All of the funds donated will go directly to the fire survivors through the Sonoma County Fire Account benefiting the survivors and firefighters affected.”

Goff’s teammate Andrew Whitworth contributed $10,000. In fact, the offensive lineman has been opening his checkbook for a good cause often. He also donated $25,000 to the Vegas Victim Fund and $5,000 to Chris Long’s foundation which is providing equal education opportunities for youth in Philadelphia, Boston and St. Louis.
