When the Texas Rangers host the Cleveland Indians in their home opener on April 3, Tony Beasley’s voice won’t just be heard as his players approach third base. The Rangers’ base coach will also be heard as he pipes the national anthem.
Beasley had to miss most of the Rangers’ season last year due to be diagnosed with rectal cancer. He beat the disease in December, and has resumed his coaching duties full-time.
“I was asked to do it [sing] last year [during the playoffs], but it was a time when I really wasn’t able to strain my abdominal muscles,” Beasley told the Star-Telegram. “It’s an honor. I’m grateful. Opening Day is special. There’s a lot going on. It’s a packed house. Usually you get someone who is known singing that day. To be asked to do it an honor. I just plan to do it justice.”
This won’t be the first time Beasley has performed the Star Spangled Banner in front of tens of thousands. Have a listen to his voice when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010.
