You could argue there’s no bigger star in gymnastics right now than 91-year-old Johanna Quaas.
The German athlete who got her start in the sport in 1934 is able to pull off moves most people in their 30s cannot. That’s why she was invited on NBC’s “Little Big Shots: Forever Young,” which aired Wednesday to highlight seniors who are still doing amazing things.
Quaas put on her signature velvet green leotard and displayed beautiful handstands and cartwheels on the floor as Steve Harvey looked on in amazement.
Then she moved over to the parallel bars, hanging upside down, twirling her entire body around the apparatus and balancing on the bars using only her arm strength. The dismount? Of course it was a perfect 10.00.
Following her routine, Harvey said, “I think she deserves an honor from us.” Then, Olympic champion Simone Biles emerged from backstage to surprise Quaas, who immediately pulled the U.S. gymnast to the top of the podium with her.
When asked what her thoughts were regarding Quaas, Biles said, “I’m speechless. I hope I can even walk at 90 years old. She’s amazing and she’s a true inspiration to everyone, and we watch her videos. The Olympic team watches her videos.”
