He may be just a rookie, but Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell has quickly become a crowd favorite in the Beehavie State, and not just because he’s leading the team in scoring with 19.7 points per game.

In mid-February, he soared into the history books and won the 2018 Verizon Slam Dunk Contest during All-Star weekend in Los Angeles. Fast forward a week, and he’s throwing down more big moves. No, not dunks, but tickets for an admirable reason: to help a young fan score a date with a classmate.

Following Mitchell’s dunk contest win, BYU student Josh Buhler sent him a direct message on Twitter asking, “Can you please hook up a huge fan with two tickets so I can ask this girl out in my chemistry class?”

Mitchell promptly responded with, “I’ll see what I can do.”

Then, the rookie from Greenwich, Conn. who played college ball at Louisville, got to work and secured a pair of tickets for the students to see the Jazz take on the Portland Trailblazers.

“…You’re about to make this the best date ever. Thank you so much,” Buhler messaged back.

Evidently, Buhler first attempted to win the tickets through a giveaway the Jazz were holding on Twitter, but then, with a nothing-to-lose attitude, he went directly to the heart of this year’s team.

There aren’t many professional athletes who would grant a request like that from a random fan. It goes to show what a down to earth guy Mitchell really is. After all, he’s just a year out of college and understands how difficult it can be for college students to fund a fun date while on a budget.

The Jazz ended up losing to the Blazers 100-81 on Friday night, so here’s hoping Buhler’s date brought more smiles than his team’s play.

Well done, Donovan Mitchell.
