The Toshiba Classic, the most philanthropic event in PGA TOUR Champions history, is all set to take over Newport Beach Country Club in Orange Country, Calif. this week.

Spectators will have the chance to watch legends like Fred Couples and Bernhard Langer compete for the $1.8 million purse. But, the real power behind the tournament is its manager and beneficiary, the Hoag Hospital, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary as host. Each year, the Toshiba Classic generates more than $1 million for charity, with the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag being the primary beneficiary since 2011. However, military causes and other community charities benefit as well.

“We are proud to host the only official PGA TOUR Champions event in Orange County,” said Jeff Purser, Executive Director of the Toshiba Classic. “Over two decades, we have raised more than $20 million for Hoag Hospital and more than 45 other local charities. This is our annual opportunity to showcase the best of our community, as the tournament draws over 80,000 patrons, 200-plus sponsors and more than 1,000 volunteers every year.

This year’s event, held  March 7-11, will feature golfers who have racked up more than 400 worldwide professional victories. In its history, the Toshiba Classic has hosted 40 PGA TOUR Champions members in the World Golf Hall of Fame, many of whom are still actively competing.

Couple that with two “fan days” to honor local heroes and introduce kids to golf, and, if you’re in the Orange County area, it’s an event worth coming out for.

Saturday, March 10, is Military Appreciation Day, which means all active and retired service members, and up to three guests, will receive complimentary admission plus food and beverage vouchers. Now in its third year of celebrating those who dedicate their lives to our country, the tournament will provide funding to military organizations, including the Open Hearts for Purple Hearts Foundation, 1/1 Foundation and Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Additionally, one military family will be chosen to receive direct financial support.

On Sunday, March 11, the second annual “Student Day” will give complimentary admission to students ages 18 and under. Family-friendly activities will include a kids’ Fun Zone with games and prizes. All high school and middle school aged students in attendance will be invited to participate in a putting contest for chances to win scholarships, golf equipment and tickets to local attractions.

Who can argue that golf isn’t a sport for all ages?
