Crystal Griner was one of the Capitol Police officers injured in the shooting at the GOP’s baseball practice on June 14 in Alexandria, Virginia.
She was shot in the ankle in the same attack that injured U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, and is expected to make a full recovery.
Upon being released from the hospital, one of the first things this hero did, even though she’s still in a wheelchair, is she headed straight to the pitcher’s mound.
That’s because Griner was invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch Wednesday evening at the 9th annual Congressional Women’s Softball Game. The game, which raises money for breast cancer research, pitted members of Congress against female reporters in the D.C. press corps.
As you’ll see in the video, Griner tells the catcher to back up, and then fires a solid pitch.

Every year, this game is a shining example of how women leaders in Congress – Republicans and Democrats – can come together to take on the women of the Washington press corps and, most importantly, raise funds and awareness for young women with breast cancer.” – Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (Conwomensoftball.org)
What a day for women on the Hill.
