Legendary Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt may have lost her battle to Alzheimer’s in 2016, but her legacy lives on in the form of helping others with the disease.
On Sunday, The University of Tennessee Medical Center dedicated the Pat Summitt Clinic to those fighting the disease.
When Summitt was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011, she and her son, Tyler, created The Pat Summitt Foundation with the goal of opening this clinic.
“It’s outrhope that by creating this Alzheimer’s Clinic at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, everyone will have access to resources that will help them as they walk through this difficult journey,” Summitt said as the clinic was being constructed.
The medical center treats about 3,000 Alzheimer’s patients annually, but with the new clinic, it should be able to double that number. The facility includes special features to make patients more comfortable such as custom lighting, neutral colors, and low noise.
“One of her favorite quotes was, ‘You win in life with people.’ It wasn’t about the championships or the wins, it was about the people, so I think this clinic will reflect that because of how much it’s going to help the people,” Tyler said.
