If tragedy strikes in the great state of Texas, it’s fair to say that J.J. Watt steps up as quickly as emergency responders.
Over the weekend, the Houston Texans star announced he would cover the cost of the funeral services for all 10 victims (eight students and two teachers) of the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas. But don’t think for a moment that Watt was done after writing checks. On Monday, he visited survivors of the shooting in the hospital.
One survivor was Clay Horn, a pole vaulting district champion who was shot once in the shoulder and once in the leg. He’s already been through one surgery and is expected to undergo another procedure on Tuesday.
Watt also surprised 16-year-old Sarah Salazar, who was shot multiple times in the shoulder and jaw.
“She is recognizing us, is nodding her head and is able to whisper things to us. Progress. Lots of family and friends visited today including a surprise visit from #JJ Watt ❤” her aunt, Blanca Gutierrez, wrote on her GoFundMe page.
“Even though she is not allowed to talk too much she has this huge smile on her face and keeps rambling on about you,” her best friend, Bri, added on Twitter. “You made her feel so special today it means so much to see that beautiful smile on her face!
GoFundMe pages have been set up for both Horn and Salazar to help cover their medical expenses.
Watt also stopped by the home of a survivor named Chase, who is recovering from his gunshot wounds.
Nicole Alfaro posted a picture of the visit on Facebook and said “No media following, no big reception to receive him, just a hero stopping by to show love and support. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you J.J. for making his day!”
There’s no better way to describe Watt than to say he’s the ultimate class act.
