Though the predicted downpour held off during Saturday play, relentless winds took their toll, with only six golfers shooting under par on day three of the Volunteers of America® Texas Shootout.
Still leading the pack at -8, Japan’s Haru Nomura took it all in stride.
“Windy (is) easy,” she said. “I like windy and tough conditions, from fairway to green.”
U.S.’ Cristie Kerr, the Republic of Korea’s Inbee Park and amateur Eun Jeong Seong are two behind at -6. Kerr was three shots back when she went on to win the LOTTE Championship just two weeks ago.
“I played really hard today,” Kerr said. “It would have been nice to make a few more putts, but standing out on the first tee, anything under par you would have taken.”
Her strategy for Sunday? Just staying in the moment.
“If I make a mistake, I’m not getting too caught up in it,” she said. “I don’t feel like I’ve peaked this week yet. I’ve had some chances to shoot some low numbers, but just haven’t quite made the putts. So, going to go work on my putting and see what happens tomorrow.”
Despite the conditions, Stacy Lewis took the concept of “moving day” seriously. She finished the third round with an impressive -5 (66), the low round of the day, moving her from a tie for 44th to solo 5th, just three shots out of the top spot. Lewis is the only American who has won this event to date.
