Portland Trail Blazers Forward Wears “Je Suis Charlie” Warm Up Shirt
The attacks in France that left 12 dead and 11 wounded Wednesday may be thousands of miles away, but they hit very close to home for Portland Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum.
Batum was born in Lisieux, France and played in the French League before making his way to the U.S. and the NBA. He even went back to France to play during the NBA’s 2011 lockout.
The two-time French League Rising Star Award winner wore a warmup shirt that read “Je Suis Charlie” or “I am Charlie” prior to his team’s game against the Miami Heat.
The message refers to the Charlie Hebdo newspaper office in Paris where two gunman created devastating damage and loss. The satirical news outlet provoked controversy over its portrayal of Islamic prophet Muhammad.
It’s clear that Batum’s roots run deep and strong, and it’s great that he wants to honor the victims and their loved ones.
